In 2014, not long after I returned to Ireland, my father’s health began to decline rapidly. He was battling kidney disease, heart problems, and severe lung damage from nearly 50 years of smoking. Over the next five years, his conditions took a heavy toll — robbing him of his independence, mobility, and joy — until he passed away in 2019.
Watching him suffer was incredibly difficult, especially knowing that his journey could have been so different had he prioritised his physical health earlier in life.
After caring for him closely for five months, I witnessed firsthand what his life had become. I felt his suffering and saw the deep despair in his eyes. And yet, I know much of it could have been prevented — not through strict or extreme measures, but with a healthier, more balanced lifestyle.
